I found J.J over the Internet.
I was so disappointed and skeptical about trainers in
the US after 5 years because I had used 7 or 8 of them. But my health
condition needed an urgent intervention. Through a Goggle search, we had
been connected. I looked up her website before she sent me her link and
I liked her "Invisible Fitness" approach, but what intrigued
me the most was her no-nonsense-attitude when I talked with her about
an hour later: I gave her a brief description of my problems and physical
limits and she kind of said: problems? What problems? Let's check it out
and give it a try!I told her of my former experiences with people who
said the same thing and she asked me to check out her method and then
I could decide my next step.
After all my experiences, I thought that trainers didn't
learn the physiology of the body at all. Most of them seem to start as
starving students that spent so much time in a gym that then decided to
get some money from it but had no real information. They knew just enough
to pass the trainer's tests‚ and get their certificate.They seemed
to act as though the human body wasn't a complex organic system but as
a bunch of muscles and bones that could flex and relax. And there was
no reason why everybody wouldn't train the same way as they did! Forget
about differences in metabolism, past accidents, psychological limitations
and health issues: if the outside looks good the inside was simply put--rusted!
Well, my outside looked normal‚. --A normal‚ chubby
girl.
I was almost 40+ lbs overweight, with a recent past of binging/bulimia,
an ongoing anxiety caused by a series of stressful life-events, two lung
surgeries, a cardiac arrest due to my under-nurtured body and a car accident
that virtually paralyzed the whole right side of my body. Aside from the
chronic dislocation of my right shoulder and a non-stop pain on my right
hip.
Then I met J.J
I was between awed and relieved: she's so passionate about her stuff,
with the models of the joints and the whole perspective of the human body
that was familiar to me. She knew what she was talking about and it seemed
like if she has been through the same or worst conditions than mine without
needing to experience them herself.
I asked the tricky questions that I learned to ask trainers that said
they knew it all and she not only got my trick, her humility and knowledge
blew me away. I was hooked and I couldn't wait for the first day.
30 sessions later I didn‚t feel the same person anymore.
I may have looked the same, I may have more or less the same physical
restraints but I wasn't "there".
I think that what happened was that J.J. showed me that there was always
a way to treat, train, and work out my body, no matter how limited my
range of movement, how poor my resistance and heart capacity or my mood--
there is a way to go around those temporary conditions and work them out.
I learned that whining was not a way out like with other trainers,
but a way to find other routes to get to the same result.
Because of my poor health condition I wasn't able to use weights or even
bands and she always made up for that lack. She always had a way to get
the targeted muscles and joints working, be it with my own body weight
or books or even different positions and isometric movements.Her enthusiasm
for what she does and what she believes in can be contagious: sometimes
I tried to 'avoid' more exercises and repetitions but instead I ended
up pushing myself for the extra mile and feeling so awesome and ready
to do it again next time. As long as the pain I was feeling didn't come
from my injuries but from work everything was fine
And I loved it
Through the magic of the Internet I finally found
a trainer that saw me as a whole system, not just a client that
paid for her counting my flexes and making me jump up and down a park
bench like a craze to get results‚ and tire me faster.
J.J. paid attention to my health.
She's without a doubt is a professional but her personal touch is what
makes it all work: she "feels" you, she connects with you and
your lifestyle and from her experience, her knowledge and her vision she
will do her best to get you where she wants you to be: in the best shape
of your life.
Want to know the best part?
I realize now, when I write this note, that her best reward is that you
get there on your own, she's the teacher but you are the one who has to
make it. She'll be there for you -be sure of that- but you are the one
who will make it happen.
Her disposition to help its more than a 'job,' it's a commitment to show
you that fitness and health is a choice and a lifestyle that goes beyond
any number of sessions a week/month with her.
It's about you and your dedication to yourself. She will give you the
means but it's up to you to use them
She gave me several professional referrals, one in particular, Jacques
Taylor from Bioconstructs, which got me where I am now:
3 months after my last training session with J.J. I dropped 10+
lbs, and remembering her teachings and words I can walk
6 miles non-stop, I can climb the Santa Monica steps 2 times
going to 3 in a row with no dire consequences, I can even jog 15 minutes
going to 25 without noticing a difference: I can get up to 165 hr for
20 minutes straight without feeling that I‚m going to have a heart
attack or loosing my breath and I can lift 8 lbs free weights for arm
exercises.
And so far, no hernias, no burn-out exercise fed-up stage.
I do have my backlashes but they are not the dead end I thought they were
before J.J.
Now all I need is a check-up or a change in my exercises to avoid getting
bored or plateauing and keep on my way to health.
